Locomotive Collision at Kanchanaburi Station Injures 18 Tourists

KANCHANABURI – A shunting locomotive crashed into a stationary passenger train at Wang Yen Railway Station in Kanchanaburi Province on Saturday, injuring eighteen tourists—both Thai and foreign nationals. The accident occurred during a routine locomotive change on the scenic Kanchanaburi-Nam Tok route, a popular journey for visitors.

Police reported that the passenger train had stopped at the station for a scheduled engine swap when the locomotive being repositioned suddenly reversed with significant force, slamming into the first passenger carriage. The impact caused substantial damage to the locomotive and jolted all six passenger coaches, injuring passengers among the nearly one hundred people on board.

Emergency responders and local officials arrived swiftly, providing on-site first aid before transporting all eighteen injured individuals to Phahol Pholpayuhasena Hospital. Four were reported to be in serious condition. A passenger aboard described the moment of impact, stating that tourists were thrown violently, with some striking windows and others falling to the floor.

Initial findings from station officials point to a brake failure on the shunting locomotive as the cause. Following the incident, Kanchanaburi Station coordinated the deployment of a replacement engine, which successfully towed the six carriages and the remaining uninjured passengers back to the station.
