Norwegian Man Arrested After Violent Tuk-Tuk and Bicycle Theft Attempt in Bangkok

BANGKOK – A 33-year-old Norwegian man was arrested in Bangkok’s Sukhumvit area on December 5 after allegedly assaulting two people and attempting to steal a tuk-tuk and a bicycle, leading to a dramatic police chase. The suspect was finally subdued and detained on Thong Lor Road by officers from Thong Lor Police Station, though he remained highly agitated in custody and injured himself by repeatedly headbutting his cell bars.

Police were alerted around noon following a reported assault near the entrance of Sukhumvit Soi 25. The first victim, a tuk-tuk driver, stated that the foreign suspect approached him under the guise of asking for directions before violently pushing him off the vehicle. As the suspect tried to drive away, the quick-thinking driver removed the keys, forcing the man to abandon the tuk-tuk and flee on foot.

The suspect then continued along Sukhumvit Road, where he encountered a second victim near Soi 43. He blocked her path, causing her to fall from her bicycle and sustain injuries, then seized her red bicycle and rode toward Thong Lor. Patrol officers quickly located him outside a hotel, where he resisted arrest until police used necessary force to restrain and handcuff him.

Both victims later positively identified the man as their assailant. Based on his erratic behavior during the incident and in custody, officers suspect he may be experiencing a mental health crisis. He has been charged with attempted robbery causing physical or mental harm and robbery causing physical or mental harm. The stolen bicycle was seized as evidence.

The suspect has been transferred to investigators for further legal proceedings. Police reported that after being placed in a holding cell, he again turned violent, injuring himself by headbutting the bars. Authorities intend to conduct further assessments of his mental and physical condition as the case moves forward.
