Thailand Issues Heightened Flu Alert as Cool Season Begins, Reports 100 Fatalities
BANGKOK – The Thai government has issued an urgent influenza warning as the country enters the cool season, revealing a troubling tally of 940,869 cases and 100 fatalities since the beginning of the year. Deputy government spokeswoman Airin Phanrit announced the heightened risk alert following a significant monthly caseload that included 161,940 influenza infections alongside substantial numbers of diarrhoea, pneumonia, RSV, and food poisoning cases, the Bangkok Post reported.

According to the Department of Disease Control, children aged 5-9 years show the highest infection rates, while the majority of deaths occur among elderly populations, with an average age of 61 years. Health officials identified the A/H3N2 strain as the dominant variant, responsible for 76% of cases.

Particularly concerning is the statistic that 94% of deceased patients had not received influenza vaccinations, with 57% having underlying health conditions including kidney disease, heart conditions, and tuberculosis.
Flu and dengue put Thais’ health at risk
The government emphasized that despite a recent slight decline in overall cases, cluster outbreaks continue to emerge in confined settings such as prisons, schools, and training centers. Health authorities are strongly urging annual influenza vaccinations for high-risk groups and recommending general precautions as seasonal temperatures continue to drop.
