PATTAYA – A recent global study has cast a shadow on the reputation of the popular Thai beach destination of Pattaya, identifying it as the eighth worst city in the world for pickpocketing and scams. The report, compiled by the U.K.-based insurance price comparison site Compare the Market, awarded Pattaya a score of 44.43 out of 100, with data indicating approximately 3.1 scam mentions for every 1,000 visitor reviews.

The study, which analyzed tourist reviews across more than 75 cities worldwide, linked Pattaya’s high ranking to its vibrant party atmosphere, which it suggests attracts opportunists seeking to exploit visitors. Travelers are being specifically cautioned to exercise heightened vigilance in areas with dense street vendors and in the city’s famed nightlife districts.

This troubling designation places Pattaya in the company of other Thai tourist hubs facing similar challenges. Bangkok was rated the absolute worst city in the same report, while Phuket secured the ninth spot. The findings highlight a significant issue for Thailand’s tourism sector, which has already been grappling with a downturn. Official figures from the Tourism Ministry show foreign tourist arrivals fell by 7.54 percent to 25.1 million in the period from January 1 to October 12 compared to the same timeframe last year.
