Thailand Ranks 7th in Global Happiness Index, Tops Southeast Asia in Well-Being

Bangkok, May 2025 – Thailand has cemented its reputation as one of the world’s happiest nations, securing 7th place in the 2025 Global Happiness Index by leading research firm IPSOS. The survey, conducted across 30 countries, highlights the kingdom’s enduring cultural emphasis on community, balance, and resilience—even amid global economic uncertainties.

A Nation of Smiles

The study, which polled 23,765 individuals under age 75 between December 2024 and January 2025, found that 79% of Thais described themselves as happy (18% “very happy,” 61% “somewhat happy”). Only 2% reported being “not happy at all”—one of the lowest rates worldwide.

  1. Taiwan

  2. Singapore

  3. Vietnam

  4. Thailand

Neighboring Malaysia tied with Thailand, while developed economies like Japan, and South Korea trailed behind.

Secrets to Thai Happiness

The survey pinpointed three core drivers:

  • Family & Connection: 72% cited time with loved ones as their top joy.

  • Social Acceptance: Feeling “loved as they are” ranked high, reflecting Thailand’s communal culture.

  • Autonomy: Control over life decisions, particularly among older adults, boosted satisfaction.

Generational Divides

  • Seniors (70+) were the happiest demographic, crediting strong family ties and Thailand’s Buddhist-inflected contentment.

  • Gen Z men reported higher happiness than women, a gap linked to financial pressures on young working women.

Challenges Ahead

Despite the rosy outlook, hurdles remain:

  • Money Stress: 34% of unhappy respondents cited finances as their primary concern.

  • Health Woes: Chronic conditions and mental health struggles dampened scores for 25%.

The government has pledged to address these pain points through expanded healthcare access, job-creation programs, and policies reinforcing family support networks. “We’re investing in lifelong well-being,” said Deputy Spokesperson Anukool Pruksanusak, highlighting initiatives like elderly care subsidies and mental health hotlines.

Global Context

Thailand’s ranking places it above G7 nations like the UK (12th) and Germany (14th), with Nordic countries dominating the top spots. Analysts attribute its success to a unique blend of low living costs, spiritual grounding, and a tourism-driven economy that fosters social openness.

Final Thought: “Thailand’s happiness isn’t about wealth—it’s about living with purpose and community,” noted IPSOS’s lead researcher. “That’s a lesson for the world.”
