Thai Airways Flight Makes Emergency Landing at Suvarnabhumi After Mid-Air Fuel Dump

Bangkok, Sunday Afternoon – A Thai Airways International flight bound for Frankfurt was forced to make an emergency return to Suvarnabhumi Airport on Sunday after encountering a technical issue shortly after takeoff, sparking alarm among onlookers who witnessed the aircraft discharging fuel over Samut Sakhon.

Aeroflot Boeing 777 Makes Emergency Landing in Bangkok Due to Technical Issues

Flight TG 922, operated by a Boeing 777-300ER, departed Bangkok at 12:25 PM and was scheduled to land in Frankfurt at 9:00 PM local time. However, the flight crew detected a malfunction—the failure of a main landing gear cover to fully retract—prompting an immediate decision to return.

Residents in Samut Sakhon, west of Bangkok, reported seeing the wide-body jet circling at high altitude while releasing fuel, leaving dramatic white vapor trails across the sky. Eyewitnesses captured the scene on their phones, with some counting three to six loops before the plane initiated its descent.

“At first, I thought it was a normal flight, but then I noticed it was going in circles and releasing something that looked like smoke,” said one local resident who filmed the incident. “It was unusual, so I started recording.”

The aircraft safely touched down at Suvarnabhumi at 2:12 PM and was directed to a maintenance bay for inspection. Thai Airways confirmed the issue was related to the landing gear but assured that at no point was passenger safety compromised. After repairs, the same plane resumed its journey at 3:20 PM, with an adjusted arrival time of 9:56 PM in Frankfurt.

Aircraft sometimes jettison fuel before emergency landings to reduce weight, ensuring they meet safe landing limits. In this case, the Boeing 777-300ER, with a maximum takeoff weight of 775,000 lbs (351,500 kg), needed to shed excess fuel to avoid structural stress upon landing.

Passengers were kept informed during the ordeal, with many expressing relief at the crew’s handling of the situation. “The captain explained everything calmly,” said one traveler. “It was unsettling, but we never felt in danger.”

Thai Airways has faced scrutiny over past technical incidents, but aviation experts stress that fuel dumping is a standard safety procedure in such scenarios. Authorities are investigating the exact cause of the landing gear malfunction.
