Plane From London Makes Emergency Landing in Bangkok, One killed, Many Injured

One dead and at least 30 injured by “heavy turbulence” and a dramatic 6,000-foot plunge on flight from London to Singapore

A Singapore Airlines flight (SQ321) en route from London to Singapore made an emergency landing at Suvarnabhumi Airport in Samut Prakan province on May 21 at 3:34 pm after encountering severe turbulence. Initial reports confirm that at least 30 passengers were injured and one passenger died.

Singapore Airlines expressed its deepest condolences to the family of the deceased.

“We can confirm that there are injuries and one fatality on board the Boeing 777-300ER. There were a total of 211 passengers and 18 crew members on board,” an airline statement said.

“Singapore Airlines offers its deepest condolences to the family of the deceased.”

“Sudden extreme turbulence, which caused an abrupt descent of 6,000 feet in four minutes,” according to the company and Thai authorities. The pilot had to declare a medical emergency and land at Suvarnabhumi airport in Bangkok, where he arrived at about 15.45 local time.

The deceased is a 73-year-old British man who apparently had heart problems and was traveling with his wife, who was taken to hospital. The man reportedly died of a heart attack, according to Kittipong Kittikachorn, director of the state-owned Airports of Thailand, at a press conference. The injured, including passengers with cranial contusions, have been admitted to a hospital in the Thai capital, he added.
