Typhoon Matmo to Intensify Monsoon, Bringing Heavy Rain and Flood Risk to Thailand

BANGKOK – While Typhoon Matmo is forecast to make landfall in China’s Guangdong province on Sunday, its influence will strengthen monsoon conditions over Thailand, leading to increased rainfall and potential flooding in several regions through October 7. The Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) confirmed the storm will not enter Thai territory but will enhance the southwest monsoon across the Andaman Sea and the Gulf of Thailand.

Thailand Braces for Shifting Weather Patterns as Rainy Season Transitions to Early Winter

As of 4 a.m. Sunday, Matmo was located over the upper South China Sea with maximum sustained winds of approximately 120 kilometers per hour, moving west-northwest at a speed of about 25 km/h. The TMD expects the storm to weaken rapidly after landfall as a high-pressure system from China extends southward between October 6 and 7.

Despite the storm’s distance, its effects will be felt across Thailand. From October 5 to 7, the strengthened monsoon is predicted to bring more widespread rain to the northern and northeastern regions, with heavy downpours expected in parts of the east and along the southern western coast. Residents in at-risk areas—particularly those near foothills, low-lying areas, and waterways—have been advised to remain vigilant against possible flash floods and runoff due to accumulated rainfall.

Mariners in the upper Andaman Sea have also been cautioned, with waves forecast to reach 1–2 meters high, exceeding 2 meters in thunderstorm areas. The TMD has urged small boats to exercise caution and avoid sailing during stormy conditions. The public is encouraged to monitor weather updates via the TMD website (www.tmd.go.th) or its 24-hour hotlines at 0-2399-4012-13 and 1182.
