Thailand’s Winter Season Commences with Varied Regional Conditions

Thailand’s official winter season began on October 23, 2025, according to an announcement from the Thai Meteorological Department. The onset of the cool season brings a distinct weather pattern across the nation, with colder conditions arriving in the upper regions while the South braces for continued heavy rainfall. This year’s seasonal transition occurred approximately one week later than the historical average.

Thailand Braces for Shifting Weather Patterns as Rainy Season Transitions to Early Winter

The Northern and Northeastern regions are experiencing the characteristic drop in temperatures driven by northeast or east winds, marking a period of typically reduced rainfall. In contrast, the Southern part of the country remains under the influence of low-pressure systems and potential tropical cyclones, leading to significant rainstorms that have raised concerns about possible flash floods.

Suchada Thaensap, Secretary to the Minister of Digital Economy and Society, provided further details on the expected conditions. She clarified that the cold weather will not be uniform across all areas immediately. The highlands and mountainous territories of the North and upper Northeast, including provinces like Mae Hong Son and Chiang Rai, are forecast to see temperatures fall to as low as 7-8 degrees Celsius, creating conditions conducive to frost formation. Meanwhile, the capital city of Bangkok can expect minimum temperatures to range between 18 and 20 degrees Celsius.

Thailand Delays Winter Arrival

The Southern region, particularly along the Gulf of Thailand, is projected to face ongoing periods of sometimes heavy rainfall. This weather pattern poses risks of flash floods, thunderstorms, and strong winds, prompting officials to advise residents in these vulnerable areas to take necessary precautions. Authorities are urging the public, especially those in the south, to closely monitor weather forecasts and heed all official warnings in the coming months to ensure safety and minimize disruptions during this varied winter period. The coldest stretch of the season is anticipated from mid-December 2025 through early February 2026, with average minimum temperatures nationwide expected to be around 21-22 degrees Celsius.
