Deputy Finance Minister Vorapak Resigns Following Accusations of Ties to Scam Networks

BANGKOK – Deputy Finance Minister Vorapak Tanyawong has announced his resignation from office amid allegations linking him to transnational scam operations based in Cambodia. The resignation follows reports from foreign media outlets which identified him as one of seven Thai politicians allegedly involved with the criminal networks.

The allegations prompted Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul to formally request a written clarification from the deputy minister yesterday. In a statement published on his personal Facebook account, Vorapak confirmed his decision to step down, citing the serious nature of the accusations against both himself and his family.

In his social media post, Vorapak addressed multiple allegations, including claims that his wife had accepted cryptocurrency bribes. He vehemently denied these accusations, stating that his wife does not even possess a cryptocurrency account. The minister referenced his recent official duties at the annual meetings of the World Bank and International Monetary Fund in Washington D.C., where he said he was occupied with multilateral and bilateral meetings and preparations for Thailand’s hosting of the meeting next October.

Vorapak explained that since returning from Washington D.C. last Sunday, he had been preoccupied with important public matters, which prevented him from immediately responding to the allegations. He confirmed having scheduled a press conference for today to address the situation directly. The former deputy minister concluded his statement by noting that he has already initiated legal proceedings against those responsible for what he characterized as false accusations.
