NONG BUA LAMPHU – A 47-year-old man has died in a tragic incident in Northeast Thailand after his e-cigarette exploded while he was fishing. The event, which occurred on October 18 in Ban Kut Chim, Mueang district of Nong Bua Lamphu province, represents the nation’s first confirmed death directly linked to a vaping device.

Initial police investigations considered the possibility of foul play, but a subsequent autopsy conclusively determined the cause of death to be a catastrophic failure of the device’s battery. Forensic experts from Nong Bua Lamphu City Police documented severe injuries to the victim’s mouth, face, chest, and left hand, with visible soot marks indicating the force and point of the blast.
The forensic analysis revealed that the explosion was so violent that it propelled three metal shards from the device into the man’s chest. These fragments penetrated his lungs and heart, causing immediate fatal injuries. While similar incidents have been reported in other countries, this distressing event is unprecedented in Thailand.
Public awareness of the tragedy was amplified after the popular Thai Facebook page “Drama Addict” confirmed the fatality on October 22, stating unequivocally, “This e-cigarette killed him.” The post has fueled growing concerns over the safety of vaping products, particularly those equipped with potentially substandard or modified batteries.
