Saudi National Arrested in Phuket for Illegal Possession of Alprazolam

PHUKET – A 30-year-old Saudi Arabian man was apprehended by Patong Police on Tuesday evening for allegedly possessing alprazolam tablets without a prescription. The arrest occurred in front of a massage shop on Bangla Road, a bustling nightlife area in Patong.

The suspect, identified only as Mr. Mohammed, was found carrying four tablets of the controlled substance, which is classified as a Category 2 narcotic under Thai law. Alprazolam, commonly prescribed for anxiety and panic disorders, is strictly regulated in Thailand, and unauthorized possession carries severe penalties, including imprisonment and potential deportation for foreign nationals.

Authorities confirmed that the pills were allegedly intended for personal use, but emphasized that possession without a valid prescription violates the Narcotics Act. The arrest underscores Thailand’s strict enforcement of drug laws, particularly in tourist-heavy areas like Patong.

Police are investigating whether the suspect had local connections to illegal drug distribution networks. If convicted, Mr. Mohammed could face significant legal consequences, including fines and a possible prison sentence.
