Ugandan Drug Courier Arrested with 16.5kg of Cocaine in Hat Yai
Songkhla, March 24, 2025 — A 29-year-old Ugandan man was arrested in Hat Yai for allegedly attempting to smuggle 16.5 kilograms of cocaine worth an estimated 30 million baht into Thailand from Malaysia. The suspect, identified as Mr. K., was apprehended by Songkhla immigration police following a tip-off and subsequent surveillance.

Authorities had been monitoring the Ugandan man after noticing his suspicious behavior at a local hotel. When he left the premises carrying a large suitcase, officers moved in for an inspection. They discovered that his passport lacked an entry stamp, prompting them to take him in for questioning.
Upon a detailed search, police found 41 plastic-wrapped packages of cocaine hidden inside various items, including backpacks, shoulder bags, shirts, picture frames, and even disassembled car parts. Mr. K. later confessed that he had been recruited by an unidentified friend to transport the drugs from Malaysia to Bangkok in exchange for $1,000.

According to his statement, he had traveled from Kelantan, Malaysia, and entered Thailand through Narathiwat before making his way to Hat Yai. He was planning to take a bus to Bangkok to deliver the drugs when he was intercepted.
The Ugandan man now faces serious charges, including illegally importing a Category 2 narcotic (cocaine) and entering the country without authorization. Police have seized the drugs and are expanding their investigation to determine who was supposed to receive the shipment in Bangkok.
