Kazakh Man Arrested in Phuket with Cocaine and Drug QR Stickers

PHUKET, Thailand – A Kazakh national was arrested at a police checkpoint in Phuket on New Year’s Eve after officers discovered cocaine hidden on his person and a batch of QR code stickers used for drug sales in his bag, spotlighting concerns over narcotics distribution networks targeting tourist zones. The arrest occurred during intensified holiday security operations.

Phuket MP Alerts Public to Russian-Linked QR Code Drug Trafficking Scheme

The suspect, identified as 33-year-old Mr. Kartashev Kirill, was stopped while riding as a passenger on a white Honda motorcycle taxi traveling from Patong to Karon in Mueang Phuket district. Officers from Karon Police Station, conducting routine public safety checks, reported that Kirill appeared nervous and suspicious, prompting a search.

During the inspection, police found one bag containing 1.10 grams of cocaine concealed in his underwear. A subsequent search of his belongings yielded 60 QR code stickers labeled “KOKC MEF,” a black Redmi A3 mobile phone, and a black shoulder bag.

Following his detention, Kirill was taken to Karon Police Station for interrogation. He confessed that the seized items were his and explained that he had been recruited through a Russian-language job group on WhatsApp. According to investigators, a contact from the group directed him to a roadside box in Patong, where he collected the cocaine, stickers, and a 500 baht payment.

Kirill stated that he had been instructed to distribute the stickers, which feature QR codes that allow users to scan and join online groups to order drugs. He admitted his intention was to place them on electricity poles and along roads in prominent tourist areas.

Authorities have charged the suspect with unlawful possession of a Category 2 narcotic (cocaine). He has been handed over to investigators at Karon Police Station for legal proceedings.
