BANGKOK – Thailand commemorates a day of profound national significance each December 5, celebrating both Father’s Day and World Soil Day in honor of the birthday of His Majesty the late King Bhumibol Adulyadej The Great. Across the country, citizens often wear yellow—the color associated with Monday, the day of King Bhumibol’s birth—as a symbol of loyalty and reverence. The day is commonly observed with family gatherings, merit-making at temples, and shared moments of remembrance, blending personal gratitude with national respect.
King Bhumibol’s seven-decade reign was distinguished by his hands-on approach to addressing rural challenges. He initiated and championed thousands of royal projects focused on soil conservation, water management, and agricultural self-sufficiency, translating scientific research into practical solutions that improved the livelihoods of countless farmers and communities.

December 5 also holds international importance as World Soil Day, a United Nations observance established following a proposal championed by Thailand in recognition of the King’s pioneering work in soil science and environmental stewardship. This year’s theme, “Soils: Where food begins,” echoes his vision by emphasizing the vital role of healthy soil in food security and ecosystem resilience, particularly amid threats such as salinity and degradation.

For Thailand, the dual commemoration reinforces a deep-rooted commitment to preserving King Bhumibol’s legacy, intertwining national reverence with a continued pursuit of sustainability and care for the land he worked tirelessly to protect.
