Tourist Assaulted Near Police Box on Phuket’s Bangla Road, Prompting Patrol Scrutiny

PHUKET – A tourist was assaulted near a police outpost on Phuket’s Bangla Road early this morning, raising questions about the effectiveness of security patrols in the popular nightlife district. The incident occurred at approximately 5:10 AM close to the Bangla Police Box, with video of the attack circulating widely on social media and drawing public criticism over the perceived delayed police response.

According to Patong Police Superintendent Police Colonel Chalermchai Hirasawat, officers were initially alerted to a man causing disturbances at the entrance to Soi Bangla before the suspect moved toward Patong Beach where the assault took place. Police subsequently apprehended the individual, charging him with public intoxication. The victim has chosen to press formal charges against the assailant.

The incident occurred shortly after Patong Police conducted a highly publicized “nighttime readiness check” along the entertainment strip as part of their Bangla Sandbox and Bangla Smart Safety Zone initiatives. These measures, which included equipment inspections and safety briefings, were intended to reinforce tourist safety and prevent late-night violence.
