Global Amazon cloud outage: faults reported in applications such as Alexa, Fortnite and Snapchat

Amazon Web Services (AWS) has suffered a global outage affecting users and businesses worldwide. According to reports from DownDetector, the problems began to be noticed around 8:40 a.m. in Europe on Monday, 20 October, disrupting a number of platforms and services that rely on Amazon’s cloud infrastructure.

Worldwide Meta outage: Facebook, Instagram, Threads and WhatsApp down

Numerous user reports of connectivity errors are appearing on social media, and among the affected services are Amazon, Alexa, Prime Video, Perplexity, Canva, Duolingo, Zoom, Tinder and Strava. Social media platforms such as Snapchat and video games such as Fortnite, Clash Royale and Roblox are also affected.

In addition, some platforms are experiencing problems with payments, along with difficulties in using messaging services and tasks such as Gmail. Although some services are active in Europe, others are down and experiencing access failures, as in the United States.

The official AWS support page reports that there is “an increase in error rates and latencies for several AWS services in the EAST-1 region.” They say they are working to resolve all incidents and return the situation to normal. “We are seeing significant signs of recovery. Most requests should be processing correctly. We are continuing to work on the backlog of requests.”

“We have implemented initial mitigation measures and are seeing signs of recovery in some affected AWS services. During this time, requests may continue to fail as we work towards a complete resolution. We recommend that customers retry failed requests.”

LATEST UPDATE: “The underlying DNS issue has been fully mitigated, and most AWS services are operating normally. Some requests may be limited as we work to fully resolve the issue. We continue to work towards a complete resolution. If you are still experiencing issues resolving DynamoDB service endpoints in US-EAST-1, we recommend flushing your DNS caches. We will provide an update before 4:15 a.m. or earlier if we have additional information to share.”

AWS allows businesses, developers and individuals to rent computing resources over the Internet instead of buying or physically maintaining them. In other words, instead of having your own servers, storage or databases in your office, you can use Amazon’s and pay only for what you use.

AWS services are widely used around the world: big names in the digital sector, such as Netflix, Spotify, Reddit and Airbnb, are users of Amazon hosting. This popularity means that a problem with this tech giant’s servers can trigger major failures across the Internet.

The problems that users may experience range from not being able to browse properly to entire websites not loading, to not being able to upload images to a server, for example.
