Worldwide Meta outage: Facebook, Instagram, Threads and WhatsApp down

On Wednesday, December 11, 2024, Meta platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, and Threads, experienced a major global outage. Reports from users across the world indicated that they were unable to access services, post content, or even log into their accounts. The outage began around 1:00 PM ET and lasted approximately two hours, affecting millions of users globally.

Meta, owner of Facebook, WhatsApp and Instagram, will lay off 11,000 workers, 13% of its workforce

Meta confirmed the disruption and attributed it to a technical issue affecting their systems. The company issued a statement apologizing for the inconvenience and assured users that the issue had been resolved, with all services gradually returning to normal by late afternoon.

This widespread outage disrupted communication and social engagement for individuals and businesses, highlighting the reliance on Meta’s ecosystem for daily interactions and operations. Similar issues have occurred in the past, prompting calls for better infrastructure redundancy to minimize disruptions of this scale.
