Myanmar Gang Arrested in Chiang Mai After Filming Sword Attack on Thai Students

CHIANG MAI — Police have arrested five ethnic Myanmar teenagers after they allegedly filmed themselves attacking Thai university students with a sword near Warorot Market in the early hours of August 29. The suspects, identified as members of a Tai Yai (Shan) gang, were apprehended following a swift investigation by Mueang Chiang Mai police.

The incident occurred around 3:20 a.m. near Chansom Bridge, a bustling area in the city center. The group, dressed in black and armed with a long sword, allegedly chased and assaulted six unprovoked Thai students, leaving one injured. Police later seized the weapon and two motorcycles used in the attack.

Pol Col Pratchaya Thisala, chief of Mueang Chiang Mai Police Station, stated that the suspects admitted to heavy drinking at a party prior to the assault. In a drunken state, they decided to target the students and record the violence for online content.

All five teenagers have been charged with assault causing injury and illegally carrying weapons in public. The investigation continues to determine if additional charges will be filed.
