Canadian Child Drowns at Phuket Beach During Family Vacation

PHUKET – A dream holiday turned to tragedy when a 10-year-old Canadian girl drowned at Kata Beach just one day after her family arrived in Thailand. The incident occurred on the evening of August 7, 2025, casting a pall over what was meant to be a month-long tropical getaway.

The Karon Police reported receiving an emergency call about a child swept away by powerful waves near the Kata Beach tourist assistance center. The victim was part of a family of six—including her parents, aged 55 and 39, and three siblings (7, 13, and 16 years old)—who had landed in Phuket on August 6.

According to witnesses, the girl was playing in the water when a sudden strong current pulled her under. Despite immediate efforts by lifeguards and rescue divers, her body was not recovered until nearly three hours later, washing ashore at approximately 7:50 p.m.

The scene was marked by profound grief as emergency responders attempted to console the devastated family. The victim’s body was transferred to Vachira Phuket Hospital for forensic examination. Authorities have not yet determined whether warning flags were posted at the time of the incident, though Kata Beach is known for its occasionally dangerous surf conditions.

This tragic accident has reignited discussions about beach safety in Phuket, particularly during monsoon season when rip currents are most hazardous. Local officials emphasized the importance of heeding lifeguard warnings and swimming only in designated safe zones.
