New Zealand Man Busted at Phuket Airport with Cocaine Stashed in Passport
A 24-year-old New Zealander’s bold drug smuggling attempt came crashing down Tuesday afternoon when eagle-eyed immigration officers at Phuket International Airport discovered cocaine cleverly—but not cleverly enough—concealed inside his passport.

The arrest unfolded at 3:10 PM when the suspect, whose name is being withheld pending formal charges, touched down on an international flight and proceeded through customs. During routine screening, Phuket Airport Immigration officers noticed suspicious irregularities in his passport. A closer inspection revealed a small resealable plastic bag containing 0.18 grams of cocaine tucked discreetly between the pages.
“This was no amateur hiding job—the drugs were deliberately placed where one might overlook them during a casual inspection,” revealed Immigration Division Commander Pol. Col. Narong Sangpetch. “But our officers are trained to spot these tricks.”
The suspect now faces severe narcotics charges under Thailand’s draconian drug laws, including:
✓ Importing a Category 2 narcotic (cocaine)
✓ Unlawful possession of an illicit substance

Authorities confirmed the man was immediately transferred to Sakoo Police Station for interrogation, where he declined to make any statement. His arrest comes amid Thailand’s intensified airport crackdown following several high-profile drug busts this year.
“This arrest sends a clear message,” warned Phuket Provincial Police Chief. “We have zero tolerance for drug smuggling, whether it’s 18 grams or 0.18 grams.”
Legal experts note that even this small quantity could land the New Zealander up to 10 years in Thai prison if convicted. The New Zealand Embassy in Bangkok has been notified and is providing consular assistance.

As the suspect sits in custody awaiting formal charges, his failed smuggling attempt serves as a stark warning to others: Thailand’s drug enforcement leaves no page unturned—literally.
