Russian National Busted in Phuket After Nearly Year-Long Visa Overstay

Phuket immigration police scored a major bust this week, arresting a 30-year-old Russian man who had been illegally living in Thailand for 332 days – one of the longest overstay cases this year.

The dramatic arrest went down at a luxury hotel in central Phuket during a special five-day crackdown (April 7-11) targeting foreign criminals and immigration violators. Officers identified the suspect only as “Mr. S.” – a serial hotel hopper who had been moving between accommodations to evade authorities.

“This wasn’t some innocent oversight,” said Phuket Immigration Chief Colonel Thanet Sukchai. “This man was deliberately gaming the system, thinking he could outsmart Thai law enforcement.”

Police reports reveal that the Russian entered Thailand legally but let his visa expire 11 months ago. He developed an elaborate scheme of short-term rentals to avoid detection. Finally he was tracked down through coordinated hotel registry checks.

Now he’s facing serious consequences:

✔ Minimum 20,000 THB fine (up to 50,000 THB)
✔ Possible 10-year ban from re-entering Thailand
✔ Potential jail time before deportation if unable to pay

The arrest comes as Thailand tightens immigration enforcement, with officials conducting daily raids on suspect accommodations across tourist hotspots.

“Let this be a warning,” Col. Sukchai added. “We have eyes everywhere – from five-star hotels to beach bungalows. Your time will run out.”

Mr. S. remains in custody at Phuket City Police Station awaiting formal charges, while Russian consular officials have been notified. His case highlights the kingdom’s new hardline stance against visa violators in the post-pandemic era.
