British Woman Faces Jail After 207-Day Visa Overstay in Phuket
A 45-year-old British national was arrested at Phuket International Airport on Tuesday morning after immigration officials discovered she had overstayed her visa by nearly seven months. The dramatic arrest occurred at 11:30 AM in the international terminal as the woman attempted to leave Thailand.

Airport immigration officers, conducting routine passport checks, flagged the woman’s documents when their system showed her visa had expired 207 days earlier – a serious violation of Thai immigration law. According to Phuket Immigration Chief Colonel Narong Sangpetch, the woman was immediately detained and later transferred to Sakoo Police Station to face formal charges.
“This was not a simple paperwork error – we’re talking about someone living in Thailand illegally for nearly seven months,” Col. Sangpetch told reporters. “Such blatant disregard for our immigration laws cannot be tolerated.”
The woman, whose identity hasn’t been released pending court proceedings, now faces severe penalties under Thailand’s strict immigration laws. First-time overstayers typically face 500 baht fines per day (potentially over 100,000 baht in this case) plus possible blacklisting from re-entering Thailand.
The arrest comes amid Thailand’s nationwide crackdown on visa violators, with immigration police conducting daily sweeps of popular expat areas. Just last week, Phuket officials deported three Russians and an American for similar offenses.
Legal experts warn that while some overstays result from genuine confusion about visa rules, this case’s extreme duration suggests willful violation. “After 90 days overstay, you’re looking at potential criminal charges beyond just fines,” explained Phuket-based immigration lawyer Somchai Eversong.
The British Embassy in Bangkok has been notified but declined comment, citing privacy concerns. Court proceedings are expected within days, with the woman likely facing swift deportation after paying substantial fines.

Authorities used the incident to remind tourists that all visas – including COVID-era extensions – now carry strict expiration dates. “Check your stamps, know your dates,” Col. Sangpetch warned. “Ignorance won’t be an excuse when you’re standing before a judge.”
