PATTAYA, Thailand – Pattaya police and human security officials arrested Thai, Lao, and Ugandan women for alleged street prostitution on Saturday night, just days before the arrival of approximately 5,000 crew members and marines aboard a United States Navy aircraft carrier, with a 20-strong team detaining 18 Thai women, five Lao women, and two Ugandan women along Pattaya beach, Pattaya Sai 2 Road, and other public areas. The arrested women were charged with street prostitution, fined, and later released, with officials stating that the action reflected enforcement of the law against street prostitution, which is illegal, and was also aimed at preventing minors from being drawn into the street trade.

Police said action against street prostitution would continue, and they would also be looking for any children forced to work as vendors or beggars, as authorities ramp up enforcement ahead of the expected influx of visitors. The arrests come as Pattaya prepares to welcome US Navy personnel when the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln and two accompanying vessels dock at Laem Chabang from September 2 to 6, with the visit expected to bring significant business for restaurants, entertainment venues, and other service-sector operators.

Police encouraged people and businesses in Pattaya to be good hosts and to welcome visitors, tourists, and the military personnel expected to arrive in large numbers, emphasising the importance of maintaining the city’s reputation as a tourist destination. The pre-emptive enforcement operation reflects broader efforts to ensure public order and safety during periods of high visitor influx, particularly when large numbers of foreign military personnel are granted shore leave. Authorities have signalled that such operations will continue throughout the US Navy visit to prevent illegal activities and maintain the city’s image.
