American Tourist, 22, Dies in Phuket After Night Out
A carefree vacation turned to tragedy when a 22-year-old American tourist from Washington State died in Phuket in the early hours of April 6 after a night of drinking with friends. The young man, whose identity is being withheld pending notification of family, had been staying at a budget-friendly hotel near Phuket’s Old Bus Terminal 1 with his Myanmar-national girlfriend.

According to Phuket City Police, the tourist left his hotel the previous evening to enjoy Phuket’s notorious nightlife. He returned around 4:30 a.m. in obvious distress, suffering from severe vomiting. His quick-thinking girlfriend immediately called for help, and he was rushed to Vachira Phuket Hospital. Despite the best efforts of medical staff, doctors were unable to save him.
Police were alerted about the death at 7:00 a.m. and have launched a full investigation. While initial reports suggest no signs of foul play, authorities are treating the case with utmost seriousness. The exact cause of death remains unknown pending toxicology results from a forensic examination, which could take several days.
This incident has cast a pall over Phuket’s vibrant tourist scene, coming just weeks after similar warnings were issued about drink safety in the popular Patong Beach area. The U.S. Embassy in Bangkok has been notified and is working with Thai authorities to assist the victim’s family with repatriation arrangements.

Local police have urged tourists to exercise caution when consuming alcohol and to always keep an eye on their drinks. “We remind visitors to stay with trusted friends when partying and seek immediate medical attention if they feel unwell,” said Police Lieutenant Colonel Somchai Preedasak, the lead investigator on the case.
The tragic death marks the third tourist fatality in Phuket this year related to nightlife incidents, raising fresh questions about safety measures in the island’s entertainment districts. Hotel staff at the hotel declined to comment, though sources say the young couple had been model guests during their stay.
