British Man Arrested in Chiang Mai for Drug Trafficking

In a recent crackdown on drug-related activities in Thailand, a British citizen residing in Chiang Mai on a student visa has been apprehended for allegedly trafficking cocaine and ecstasy. Identified as C. G., a 48-year-old hailing from London, he purportedly utilized a popular app to facilitate his online drug sales.

The arrest transpired in Chiang Mai after law enforcement received a tip-off regarding C. G.’s illicit activities. Acting on this information, an undercover officer arranged a meeting with the British national at a cannabis shop on March 12, purportedly to purchase cocaine, ketamine, magic mushrooms, LSD, and ecstasy. Upon completion of the transaction, Thai authorities swiftly detained him, discovering significant quantities of assorted drugs at his residence.

Reports indicate that C. G. confessed to his involvement in drug distribution, asserting that he had procured the narcotics from another tourist. Additionally, he purportedly disclosed paying nearly 50 pence per gram for the illicit substances. Authorities suspect that his enrollment as a student was a facade to conceal his drug trafficking endeavors.

In the aftermath of his arrest, Thai police have formally charged “C. G.” with drug possession with the intent to distribute. Under Thai law, individuals convicted of drug trafficking offenses face severe penalties, including life imprisonment or capital punishment. This incident underscores a troubling trend of British tourists engaging in illicit drug activities in Thailand, prompting concerns over foreigners flouting local laws.
