Until now, clashes that began on Sunday had been confined to the neighboring provinces of Ubon Ratchathani, Si Sa Ket, Surin, and Buri Ram. The escalation into Sa Kaeo comes after Thai security forces recently intensified a crackdown on alleged Cambodian encroachments in the border villages of Ban Nong Chan and Ban Nong Ya Kaew in Khok Sung district, following a ceasefire brokered in late July.
