Thai Army Accuses Cambodia of Unlawful Detention at Poipet Border
SA KAEO – The Royal Thai Army has issued a stark warning that Cambodian authorities are effectively detaining thousands of Thai citizens by blocking their return through the Poipet border checkpoint. The situation has escalated humanitarian and security concerns, with more than one hundred Thais already having re-entered Thailand illegally after being barred from departing Cambodia via official channels.
Cambodia Blocks Return of Thais at Poipet Border Crossing Indefinitely
The army’s statement on December 14, 2025, follows reports that Cambodian officials at the Poipet crossing in Banteay Meanchey province have refused exit to Thai nationals. This obstruction persists despite a formal request from the Thai government, delivered via its embassy on December 11, to facilitate the departures. The permanent Klong Luek crossing in Thailand’s Aranyaprathet district remains closed indefinitely.
Major General Winthai Suvaree, spokesperson for the Royal Thai Army, stated that Cambodia’s actions may constitute unlawful detention or closely resemble the taking of civilians as hostages. He warned this creates an international perception of illegal detention and violates fundamental human rights, specifically the right to return to one’s country of origin.
“Cambodia has suspended entry to and exit from the country via land border checkpoints, resulting in a number of foreign nationals, including Thais seeking to return home, being stranded.
This action constitutes a clear violation of international law.” pic.twitter.com/e9pnbq2SYx— PR Thai Government (@prdthailand) December 14, 2025
The spokesperson further asserted that the blockade may breach international humanitarian law, including the Geneva Conventions and their Additional Protocols concerning the protection of civilians during armed conflict. He indicated that those involved in such unlawful detention could be liable for war crimes under international law. As a signatory to these conventions, Major General Winthai emphasized Cambodia’s legal obligation to comply and facilitate the prompt return of the several thousand Thai citizens stranded at Poipet.
Facing the closed official crossing, Thai nationals have begun crossing back into Sa Kaeo province through informal natural routes. The Eastern Border Force reported that soldiers and rangers have intercepted over one hundred individuals over two days. Authorities state that those found wanted for other offences will face legal proceedings, while others will be released to return home.
