Crisis Deepens as Floods Submerge Central Thailand

BANGKOK – Devastating floods continue to overwhelm central Thailand, with thousands of residents trapped in inundated homes for over two months and many describing the crisis as more severe than the historic 2011 disaster. Critical infrastructure failures have exacerbated the situation across multiple provinces, leaving communities isolated and desperate.

Chao Phraya Flood Surge to Impact Bangkok and Neighboring Provinces Through Next Week

In Sing Buri, a vital sandbag barrier along the Chao Phraya River in In Buri District collapsed, unleashing floodwaters that have submerged In Buri School and now threaten In Buri Hospital. Meanwhile, in Chai Nat’s Sapphaya District, multiple earth dike failures have sent meter-high water cascading through communities, forcing thousands of families to evacuate to higher ground along highways. Ayutthaya residents remain trapped in their homes, surviving on makeshift elevated platforms as waters persist.

Satellite imagery from the Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency (GISTDA) reveals the staggering scale of the disaster, showing approximately 1,300 square kilometers of land across four provinces submerged, primarily affecting agricultural zones and riverside communities. Ayutthaya has suffered the most extensive damage with over 405,000 rai flooded across twelve districts.

Central Thailand Floods Projected to Recede by Late November, Officials Say

Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, during a Wednesday visit to affected areas, acknowledged the severity of the situation and announced monthly compensation for farmers until waters recede. The government faces growing criticism from residents who believe water management strategies are prioritizing Bangkok’s protection at their expense. GISTDA has committed to continuous satellite monitoring to support disaster response efforts as the crisis continues.
