Thailand Presents Evidence of Alleged Cambodian Landmine Use to International Diplomats
SI SA KET — Thailand hosted a delegation of foreign diplomats on Thursday to showcase what it claims are newly laid Cambodian landmines along the contested border, highlighting the humanitarian risks to both soldiers and civilians.
International Envoys to Assess Thai-Cambodian Border Mine Situation
The one-day tour brought together representatives from 33 nations, including ten ambassadors from the Philippines, European Union, Netherlands, Spain, Ireland, Luxembourg, Italy, Holy See, Sri Lanka, and Turkey. Senior diplomats from Norway, France, Switzerland, and other nations also attended, alongside observers from the Golden West Humanitarian Foundation and Norwegian People’s Aid—both signatories to the Ottawa Convention banning anti-personnel mines.
The delegation visited Phu Makua, a recent flashpoint in Thai-Cambodian clashes, where Thai demining units demonstrated clearance operations. Officials presented retrieved mines they allege were recently planted by Cambodian forces, countering Phnom Penh’s assertion that the explosives are remnants of past conflicts.
Representatives from 33 countries, including ten ambassadors, took part in a field trip, organised by Thailand, to observe sites affected by landmines allegedly laid recently by Cambodian troops.

The envoys also inspected a rocket-damaged school in Sao Thong Chai and civilian homes in Ban Nong Mek village hit by cross-border attacks. Bangkok organized the visit to bolster its claims that Cambodia’s alleged new mine deployments violate international humanitarian norms.

“These mines don’t distinguish between soldiers and children,” a Thai military spokesperson stated, emphasizing the indiscriminate threat to border communities. Cambodia has yet to respond to the latest allegations. The visit aims to galvanize international pressure as Thailand seeks a mediated resolution to the escalating border crisis.
