The incident occurred around 2 a.m. on August 20 outside a hotel on Soi Sukhumvit 13. The victim, 41-year-old Aunyamanee, had booked a ride from the On Nut area via a mobile application. During the journey, the driver reportedly ran red lights and sped excessively, ignoring her repeated requests for caution.
After arriving at an incorrect destination despite accurate input in the app, Aunyamanee paid the 57-baht fare via mobile banking but confronted the driver about his dangerous behavior. The rider became enraged, justifying his actions by citing low fares and time pressures. The argument escalated when he revved his engine and drove directly toward her, narrowly missing her before fleeing the scene. The act was partially captured on video by witnesses.
A motorcycle taxi is a fast, direct and sometimes thrilling means of transport when navigating Bangkok’s heavy traffic. However, unlike the BTS or MRT with their fixed pricing, or metered taxis, motorcycle taxi fares can sometimes be unclear, leading to overcharging.
