Maya Bay to Close for Annual Marine Recovery Period

Krabi – Thailand’s Department of National Parks has announced the seasonal closure of Maya Bay and Loh Sama Bay from August 1 to September 30, 2025, as part of ongoing efforts to protect the fragile marine ecosystem of the world-famous destination. The two-month shutdown allows coral reefs, shorelines, and marine life to recover from the impact of heavy tourism traffic.

Made globally famous by the 2000 film The Beach, Maya Bay has faced significant environmental strain due to its popularity, welcoming thousands of daily visitors during peak season. The annual closure, now a well-established conservation measure, provides critical recovery time for the bay’s delicate ecosystems. Park authorities at Hat Noppharat Thara–Mu Ko Phi Phi National Park will conduct ecological restoration projects, including coral rehabilitation and shoreline stabilization.

While the two bays will be off-limits, tourists can still explore other stunning locations within the national park, including Phi Phi Don Island, Ton Sai Bay, Monkey Beach, and approved dive sites. Officials emphasize that all activities will remain regulated to minimize environmental disruption.

The seasonal shutdown reflects Thailand’s commitment to sustainable tourism, balancing visitor access with long-term conservation. “This closure is essential to preserving Maya Bay’s natural beauty for future generations,” said a park representative. “With responsible tourism, we can ensure this iconic site remains vibrant and healthy.”

Thailand’s Maya Bay reopens on October 1st

Since the annual closures began, marine biologists have reported signs of recovery, including regrowth in coral populations and improved water clarity. Authorities encourage travelers to respect the closure and explore alternative sites, reinforcing the importance of environmental stewardship in one of Thailand’s most treasured landscapes.
