SUPHAN BURI — A massive explosion at an unlicensed fireworks factory killed at least 10 people and injured one on Wednesday morning, marking yet another tragic incident in a province with a long history of similar disasters.

Blast Rips Through Residential Area

The explosion occurred around 10:59 a.m. at a house in Mueang district, where authorities suspect the clandestine production of bird-scaring fireworks. Nine people died instantly, while another succumbed to injuries at a nearby hospital. The force of the blast destroyed two houses and a vehicle, leaving behind two large craters and scattered gunpowder.

Illegal Operation Uncovered

Investigations confirmed the factory lacked proper licensing and was operating illegally. Acting Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai ordered a full probe into the incident, emphasizing that Suphan Buri has repeatedly suffered from such explosions.

History of Tragedy

This is not the first deadly blast in the area. Between 2006 and 2024, eight separate explosions in Mueang district claimed 31 lives and injured 15. Authorities have set up an emergency operations center at a nearby temple to assist affected residents, while an Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) unit secures the site to prevent further detonations.
