Driver injured when cement block falls on Bangkok’s Rama 2 highway

This latest accident adds to a growing list of incidents linked to falling construction materials from the Rama 2 expressway project, a high-profile infrastructure development that has repeatedly come under fire for safety lapses.

The Department of Highways revealed that more than 2,500 accidents have occurred on Rama 2 Road between 2018 and March 2025, claiming 143 lives and injuring 1,441 people. The situation reached a tragic peak on March 15, 2025, when a collapsed concrete beam from a bridge under construction in Chom Thong district killed five people and injured 22 others.
The Rama 2 expressway expansion, a joint venture between Italian-Thai Development Plc and Vijitphan Construction, has faced mounting criticism over safety failures and construction hazards. Despite repeated promises of stricter oversight, falling debris continues to endanger motorists below.

UPDATE: The man who had a large concrete slab fall from an elevated structure onto his van on Rama II Road in Samut Sakhon province, on the outskirts of Bangkok, has died, according to hospital sources.
