Iranian Couple Arrested in Pattaya for Elaborate Tourist Scam

Pattaya, Thailand – April 28, 2025 – A brazen scam targeting foreign tourists in Pattaya has been uncovered after an Iranian couple was arrested for allegedly stealing $700 from an Israeli visitor in a carefully orchestrated money-switching scheme.

The suspects, identified as Mr. A.F.H., 49, and Mrs. M.K.A., 42, were apprehended following a swift investigation by Tourist Police Division 4 and Chonburi Immigration Police. The arrest came after an Israeli tourist reported being duped in front of a resort on April 24.

According to authorities, the couple approached the victim under the pretense of inspecting U.S. dollars, a common tactic used in currency exchange scams. Once the tourist handed over the cash, the suspects allegedly used sleight-of-hand tricks to pocket $700 before fleeing.

The victim immediately alerted the Tourist Police Hotline (1155), prompting officers to review CCTV footage and track down the suspects to their Jomtien accommodation. A search of their room uncovered clothing matching the description from the incident, along with seven $100 bills—their serial numbers exactly matching those stolen.

While this case involves a single victim, authorities suspect the couple may have targeted other tourists in a similar fashion. Pattaya, a hotspot for international visitors, has seen various scams over the years, but this arrest highlights a growing concern over sophisticated theft operations by foreign nationals.

The suspects now face serious charges, including joint theft at night—a crime that carries stiffer penalties under Thai law. Police are expanding their investigation to determine if more victims were affected.

The Tourist Police have urged travelers to be cautious when exchanging money or dealing with strangers offering unsolicited help. “Always conduct financial transactions at licensed exchange booths and avoid handing cash to individuals on the street,” advised a senior officer.
