BTS Green Line extension project to begin construction after Songkran

BANGKOK, 22 March 2012 (NNT) – The construction of the 13-kilometer-long BTS Green Line extension in Bangkok from Bearing to Samut Prakan is set to begin on April 16, with plans to seal off traffic islands along Sukhumvit Road one section at a time.

The Mass Rapid Transit Authority of Thailand (MRTA) approved the extension plan for the BTS Green Line on March 1 this year. Giant construction firm Cho Karnchang was then awarded the contract to build the extended rail. The project is due to be completed in late 2015.

Starting from Bearing Station at Soi Sukhumvit 107, the elevated rail line will run along traffic islands and across Samrong Canal towards Thepharak and Pu Chao Saming Phrai intersections. From there, it will continue past the Southern Outer Ring Road and the Samut Prakan City Hall towards Phraek Sa and Sai Luad intersections before reaching its terminal at the Bang Ping power sub-station. The extended Green Line will consist of 9 stops in total.

The first section of road closures will span from Phraek Sa intersection to the Bang Ping power facility. Along with the traffic islands, 2 out of 6 traffic lanes will also be closed for construction from April 16 onwards.
