BANGKOK, 17 September 2011 (NNT) – A public burn-off of seized narcotics worth 2.45 billion Baht was staged this morning with Thai Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra chairing the event.
The 821 kilograms of illicit drugs were incinerated at Bang Pa-in Industrial Estate, in Ayutthaya, Thailand as part of the Government’s policy to make narcotics suppression an urgent national agenda. The Food and Drug Administration Deputy Secretary General Pongpan Wongmani said the drug bonfire was the 40th since Thailand announced wars to wipe out narcotics from the Thai society. The narcotics were collected from 133,221 cases which have reached final sentence.
He said the incineration involved high temperatures of over 850 degrees Celsius, which would not cause pollution in the air.
After the drug bonfire, Prime Minister Yingluck, accompanied by the Public Health Minister, visited flood-affected people in Bang Sai District, where she also distributed relief packages.
