PATTANI, Sept 22 — A male medical worker, a practicing midwife, was shot by unknown assailants using M16 assault rifles this afternoon as he drove his motorcycle from a field assignment back to his office, a hospital in this insurgency-impacted province.

Seriously wounded, he was helped by local residents and made it to his own hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival.
