Widespread Flooding Submerges Southern Provinces and Ayutthaya, Displacing Thousands
BANGKOK – Four southern provinces are grappling with severe flooding following days of torrential rainfall triggered by a cold front, while the central province of Ayutthaya remains largely inundated. The affected southern regions include Surat Thani, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Phatthalung, and Songkhla, where rising waters have disrupted daily life, damaged infrastructure, and prompted large-scale relief operations.
Record Rainfall Submerges Southern Thailand, Triggers Maximum Alert
In Surat Thani, seven districts have been declared public disaster zones, impacting over 6,500 households across 227 villages. Chaiya district, a natural catchment area, is among the hardest hit, with floodwaters reaching one meter in some areas and forcing several schools to close. Local authorities, police, and military personnel have been mobilized to distribute essential supplies such as ready-to-eat meals and drinking water to affected residents.

The flooding has also crippled transportation networks, particularly in Nakhon Si Thammarat, where submerged and damaged rail tracks in Ron Phibun sub-district have forced the suspension of several southern train services. Passengers are being transferred to buses to bypass the flooded sections. Emergency measures are in place at medical facilities, with sandbags deployed around Maharaj Hospital and critically ill patients evacuated from Phra Phrom Hospital.
Crisis Deepens as Floods Submerge Central Thailand
Meanwhile, in Ayutthaya, 12 districts remain underwater despite a reduction in the discharge rate from the Chao Phraya Dam. The flooding has impacted more than 64,000 households and resulted in 20 fatalities to date. With further rainfall forecast in the south through the weekend, authorities are urging residents in vulnerable areas to prepare for continued flooding.
