Icelandic Driver Faces Charges for Reckless Drifting in Chonburi

CHON BURI – An Icelandic national was arrested on October 7 for performing dangerous drifting maneuvers in a rented pickup truck in Chon Buri. The incident, which was captured and widely shared on social media, showed an orange Ford Raptor being driven recklessly at the Bang Saen Roundabout and other intersections, both during heavy rain and in daytime traffic.

Authorities from the Saen Suk Police Station identified and located the vehicle’s Thai owner, who confirmed she had rented the pickup to the Icelandic client for over two years. The owner expressed disappointment but stated that the tenant denied being the driver at the time of the incident, instead claiming a friend was responsible. Police confiscated the vehicle and requested the owner’s cooperation for further questioning.

Following the information provided, officers arrested the Icelandic suspect at his residence. While specific charges are still being finalized, he is expected to be fined under Section 43(3) of the Land Transport Act for reckless driving, with penalties ranging from 400 to 1,000 baht.

This case is the latest in a series of similar incidents involving foreign drivers. In September, a foreign national was arrested for drifting in a Phuket parking lot, and in January, a Lithuanian man received a 12,000-baht fine for a comparable stunt in Chon Buri. The repeated occurrences have raised public concern over dangerous driving behavior by foreign nationals.
