Remains of Homeless Thai Man Found in Cambodia to be Repatriated

BANGKOK – The Thai-Cambodian coordinating centre is arranging the repatriation of a Thai national whose body was discovered on a street in the Poipet border town. The victim has been identified as 24-year-old Methacharn Yorsaeng, originally from Nakhon Si Thammarat province.

According to official reports, Methacharn had previously worked as a chef on cruise ships before relocating to Cambodia for employment. He subsequently lost contact with friends and family in Thailand and was eventually found living homeless before his death. The coordinating centre revealed that Methacharn had attempted to return to Thailand through the Poipet border checkpoint but was denied exit due to the indefinite closure of the border between the two countries.

Authorities anticipate that his remains will be returned to his relatives through the Klong Luek border checkpoint this afternoon. Labour Minister Treenuch Thienthong confirmed that no record exists of Methacharn applying to work in Cambodia through the Fund for Helping Thais Working Abroad. However, Social Security Fund records indicate he was a member for only two months last year.

Minister Thienthong noted the challenges in obtaining information about the victim due to the absence of a labour attaché in Cambodia, adding that only a small number of Thai nationals are working legally in the neighbouring country. The case highlights the vulnerabilities faced by Thai migrant workers abroad, particularly during border restrictions.
