Fire Erupts at 38-Storey Bangkok Condominium, Prompting Mass Evacuation
BANGKOK – A fire broke out on the 16th floor of a 38-storey condominium in the Pinklao area on the afternoon of October 9, sending thick smoke billowing from the high-rise and triggering a large-scale evacuation of residents. Emergency crews were dispatched to the scene on Somdet Phra Pinklao Road at approximately 2:00 PM, with firefighters from the Bang Khun Non Station managing to bring the blaze under control within 45 minutes.

Upon arrival, responders encountered flames and dense smoke emanating from a single unit on the 16th floor. Firefighting teams worked to extinguish the fire while simultaneously assisting residents, including elderly individuals, children, and foreign nationals, in evacuating the building via emergency escape routes. The building’s alarm system was reported to have functioned correctly; however, the automatic sprinkler system failed to activate.

According to Bangkok’s Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Office Director, Suriya Chai Rawiwan, the fire was contained to one 60-square-meter apartment. The cause remains undetermined and is under investigation. More than 20 residents were treated for smoke inhalation at the scene. In a separate incident, rescue workers discovered an elderly woman unconscious on the 33rd floor and administered first aid until she regained consciousness before safely evacuating her.

Following the containment of the fire, crews conducted ventilation operations to clear residual toxic smoke from the building. Residents were temporarily prohibited from returning to their units pending a full safety assessment. The Bangkok Noi District Office coordinated temporary accommodation for those displaced by the incident. A full forensic investigation into the cause of the fire and the failure of the sprinkler system will be conducted by the Fire Evidence Examination Division.
