Luxury Car Pile-Up on Nonthaburi Expressway Sparks Racing Investigation
NONTHABURI – Authorities are investigating whether illegal street racing caused a massive 11-vehicle collision involving high-end cars on an elevated expressway in Pak Kret district early Saturday morning. The crash occurred at 12:30 am on the Sri Rat-Udon Ratthaya expressway in tambon Ban Mai, leaving three people with minor injuries.

Pol Lt Gen Nithithorn Jintakanont, the Royal Thai Police’s road traffic commissioner, confirmed Sunday that while initial evidence points to reckless driving as the primary cause, investigators have not ruled out possible illegal racing activity. The collision involved luxury vehicles including BMW, Mercedes-Benz, and Toyota Alphard models. Blood alcohol tests conducted on drivers involved came back negative.
“If this was reckless driving rather than organized racing, offenders will face dangerous driving charges,” said Pol Lt Gen Nithithorn. “But we treat street racing with particular severity as it endangers lives and disrupts communities.”
Police have yet to find out if Saturday’s expressway pile-up – involving 11 vehicles, including luxury cars – on an elevated road in Nonthaburi province resulted from illegal street racing.

Under Thai law, illegal street racers risk three months’ imprisonment and fines up to 10,000 baht, while organizers face doubled penalties. All vehicles used in unauthorized races face confiscation. Reckless driving carries stiffer punishments of up to one year in jail and 20,000 baht fines.

The commissioner emphasized that expressway authorities are reviewing CCTV footage to determine whether the crash resulted from coordinated racing or individual speeding. The investigation continues as police work to reconstruct the chain-reaction collision that blocked the Pathum Thani-bound lanes.
