Bangkok slightly shaken by Myanmar earthquake

BANGKOK — Office workers across Bangkok evacuated high-rise buildings on Tuesday morning after a 5.4-magnitude earthquake struck the Andaman Sea off Myanmar’s southern coast, sending tremors through the Thai capital for approximately 10 seconds.

Dozens Trapped as Earthquake Topples Bangkok High-Rise in Deadly Collapse

The quake, which occurred at 9:58 a.m. at a depth of 10 kilometers about 211 kilometers southwest of Mae Sot district in Tak province, prompted precautionary evacuations at several locations, including the Labour Ministry in Din Daeng. Employees were seen gathering on streets before returning indoors shortly after.

Though no injuries or structural damage were reported, occupants in neighborhoods like Phaya Thai described swaying light fixtures, rippling water in glasses, and mild nausea caused by the subtle vibrations. The Earthquake Monitoring Division of the Meteorological Department confirmed the tremor posed no tsunami risk.

The incident revived memories of the devastating 7.7-magnitude quake that hit Myanmar on March 28, which caused significant destruction and fatalities, including the collapse of a government building under construction in Bangkok that trapped nearly 90 workers.

Tuesday’s event underscored Bangkok’s vulnerability to distant seismic activity due to its soft soil and dense concentration of high-rises. Authorities continue to monitor aftershocks, though no further disruptions are anticipated.
