BANGKOK — A 61-year-old man opened fire at Or Tor Kor market in Chatuchak district on Monday, killing five people before turning the gun on himself in a shocking midday attack that sent shoppers fleeing in panic.

The shooting erupted at 12:38 p.m., with eyewitness footage capturing the assailant—later identified as Noi Praidaen from Nakhon Ratchasima’s Khong district—firing indiscriminately before retreating past the bodies of four slain security guards. A woman vendor was also killed, while two other female victims sustained injuries.

Police discovered Praidaen’s body on a market bench wearing a black T-shirt and camouflage shorts, a rucksack beside him. Investigators recovered his ID and driver’s license but have not disclosed a motive. The weapon used—reportedly a handgun—was found at the scene.

As forensic teams processed the crime scene, stunned vendors described the market’s normally bustling corridors turning into “a war zone” during the attack. Or Tor Kor, a popular fresh food hub near Chatuchak Weekend Market, remained closed indefinitely as authorities launched a probe into Praidaen’s background and possible grievances.
