Hidden Explosives Maim Civilians in Lop Buri Village Attacks

Lop Buri – Two civilians suffered devastating injuries from booby-trapped household items planted near a rural village entrance, exposing alarming security gaps in central Thailand. The concealed explosives—disguised as common tools—have left an 18-year-old student permanently disabled and raised urgent questions about police responsiveness.

Phang Nga Police Arrest Two Men with Explosive Device in Vehicle

The violence began on June 21 when Supanit, a local woman, discovered what appeared to be a new headlamp at Ban Chon Phueng village’s entrance. The device detonated when activated inside her vehicle, mangling both hands. Despite her severe injuries, Lop Buri police refused to file a formal report, callously suggesting she “would be dead” if it were truly explosive. Their inaction allowed a second, more brutal attack to occur just 48 hours later.

On June 23, 60-year-old Phairin brought home a seemingly discarded drill battery pack from the same location. When her nephew Korawit attempted to assemble the device that evening, the explosion tore through their home with such force that neighboring houses trembled. The blast cost the high school student his right eye, three fingers, and left him with critical chest trauma—injuries requiring intensive care at Ban Mi Hospital. Phairin sustained head lacerations from flying debris.

Village headwoman Jintana Sirisombut has demanded an immediate investigation into what residents now fear is a targeted campaign. “These weren’t accidents—someone is weaponizing curiosity against our people,” she told reporters outside the bomb-scarred home. Forensic teams confirmed both devices were sophisticated enough to detonate upon interaction, suggesting military-grade knowledge.

Authorities face mounting criticism for their delayed response, with national police now taking over the case from local officers. Security checkpoints have been established around Chon Noi subdistrict as bomb squads sweep the area for additional threats.
