Bangkok Taxi Drivers Warned Against Airport Blockade Protest
BANGKOK – The Department of Land Transport (DLT) has issued a stern warning to taxi drivers planning to blockade Suvarnabhumi Airport in protest against ride-hailing services, vowing legal consequences for any disruptions.

DLT Director-General Chirute Visalachitra emphasized that “airport blockades are illegal” after a group of traditional taxi drivers rallied near Government House on Wednesday. The protesters demanded a ban on ride-hailing services at airports, claiming they are cutting into their earnings, and threatened to obstruct airport access if their demands are ignored.
Chirute clarified that Airports of Thailand (AOT), which manages six international airports, has the authority to regulate transport services, including ride-hailing access. He noted that while 6,000 daily trips at Suvarnabhumi are served by traditional taxis, ride-hailing apps account for 5,000 trips—many of which are fulfilled by the same taxi drivers using digital platforms.

“Technology is inevitable. Taxi drivers must adapt,” Chirute said, highlighting that many cabbies already use apps to supplement income.
Deputy Transport Minister Surapong Piyachote said officials will hold talks on May 28 to address grievances but stressed that “transport choices must remain open to the public.”
