Australian Tourist Arrested for Cannabis Theft in Phuket
PHUKET – A 20-year-old Australian tourist has been arrested for allegedly stealing cannabis from a Phuket dispensary after the shop owner’s social media post sparked a public outcry and led police to the suspect.

The incident occurred earlier this week at a cannabis shop near Panwa Beach, where surveillance footage captured a group of foreign tourists working together to steal the product. One member of the group blocked the employee’s view while another distracted them, allowing a third to discreetly take the cannabis.
Frustrated by the theft, the shop owner posted the security footage on social media on May 28, offering a 5,000 THB reward for information. The post quickly went viral, drawing attention to the case. The following day, the owner filed a formal complaint with Wichit Police, who launched an investigation.
Authorities identified the suspects as Australian tourists staying in Patong. On the evening of May 29, police arrested 20-year-old Mr. Haddara, who had arrived in Thailand just days earlier on May 26. When presented with the video evidence, he reportedly confessed to the theft.
“After receiving the evidence, our team acted swiftly to locate and detain the suspect,” a Wichit Police spokesperson said. The case highlights the growing role of social media in aiding law enforcement, as well as the risks tourists face when engaging in illegal activities abroad.
