Police seized 4 AK-47 assault rifles and 54 rounds of 7.62 mm ammunition hidden in a white sack behind the passenger seat.
Police at the checkpoint noticed suspicious behavior among the four men during a routine vehicle inspection. A search revealed the military-grade firearms and ammunition concealed in their car.
The suspects confessed they were traveling to Phuket, though their intended purpose for the weapons remains under investigation.
The men have been handed over to Phang Nga police station for questioning and prosecution. Authorities are working to determine the origin of the weapons, whether the suspects have links to criminal networks or insurgent groups, and whether they planned to use the firearms in Phuket.
Phuket, a top tourist destination, has strict security measures to prevent violent crime.
The suspects could face serious penalties under the Thai Firearms Act, including illegal possession of firearms and ammunition (up to 10 years imprisonment) and possible links to organised crime or terrorism (if proven).
