Historic Moment: Same-Sex Marriage Registration Begins Across Thailand
Thailand’s Marriage Equality Act officially comes into effect today, January 23, 2025, allowing authorities to issue marriage certificates to same-sex couples. This landmark legislation represents a significant step forward for the LGBTQ community, promoting equality and reducing discrimination nationwide.
Thailand’s Marriage Equality Law Takes Effect January 22
Starting today, the government will open registration for same-sex marriages under the new law, offering services to couples of all sexual orientations at 878 district offices across Thailand, 50 districts in Bangkok, and 94 Thai embassies and consulates worldwide.
The Department of Provincial Administration, under the Ministry of the Interior, has prepared regulations, legal frameworks, and systems to facilitate marriage registrations. Officials have been trained to ensure services are provided with equality and without discrimination. Additionally, the new system for marriage and divorce registrations has been successfully tested, and the necessary forms for marriage and divorce certificates are ready for use.
